As any responsible dog owner will know, it can be a problem knowing how to dispose of those horrid little plastic bags that are used when a dog “has to do what a dog has to do”.

Dog walkers on the increasingly popular footpath from Manchester Road to Giantswood Lane now have two points at which to deposit their ‘little black bags’. As a result of a joint initiative by Bloor Homes and Hulme Walfield and Somerford Booths Parish Council there is now a dog bin sited on the end of the footpath.

Julie Mason, Clerk to the Parish Council recently met up with Steven Oliver and Lewis Legge of Bloor Homes to thank them on behalf of all local dog owners for paying the cost of siting the dog bin near the Manchester Road end of the Bloor Homes development.

Julie said “As a Parish Council, we are keen to encourage the responsible disposal of dog waste.  Only a minority of dog owners let their dogs foul our pavements and footpaths which is both an offence, offensive and a health hazard, particularly to young children. The little bags are all too often left hanging on twigs and branches.  This is not only anti-social, but also unsightly and a threat to farm and other animals”. She added “ It is good to work cooperatively with housing developers and I want to thank Bloor Homes and Congleton Town Council ( who empty the bins) for their most welcome contribution to the enjoyment of our delightful parish”

Dog owners should note that Cheshire East has powers, through Public Space Protection Orders, to impose a fixed penalty fine of £100 on irresponsible dog owners who fail to pick up and correctly dispose of dog waste.  Julie added “I hope that such an order will not be required in our parish. We want all residents to enjoy its beauty, and encourage all dog owners to act in a responsible manner”.
